Psalm 121:1-8 KJV "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, From whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, Which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: He that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is thy keeper: The LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, Nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: He shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in From this time forth, and even for evermore."
God is our HELP, our KEEPER, and our PRESERVER. In this short eight verse Psalm, we find these three words repeated eight times.
For or about whom do the promises refer? God's people. Are you His child? If so, claim the promise.
Are you downcast with burdens too heavy to bear? The Psalm begins with: "I will lift up my eyes to the hills..." Some commentators say this Psalm was one of the songs sung by the children of Israel as they journeyed to Jeruselem to visit the temple on holy days. Jerusalem is built on hills. To the east and west are the Dead Sea and Mediterranean Sea. The journey to be in God's house would most likely have been an upward climb. As they traveled, the writer acknowledges their help comes from God. When we are in despair for whatever reason, we as God's child need to look for help in God, and in His church. As the Psalm reads: we need to "look to the hills" as well.
Another question...is the one we look to for help capable? If it is God, then YES! After all, as it says in verse 2: He is the one who made EVERYTHING (the heavens and earth.) And He doesn't sleep: He's always available. Unlike people like me who turn their phone on mute at night and nap time. God protects Israel, an entire nation! This fact is pointed out in verse 4. So it's not hard for Him to protect you or me – just one person.
When will the Lord be there for us? Verse 8 says: "from this time forth and forevermore." So God will help NOW. He is the God of the present. And He will also be there for us ALWAYS. Forevermore means in our future and FOREVER! Don't be anxious about tomorrow. God's got you.
As I meditate on this Psalm and write this personal commentary, I think of five friends I’ve communicated with in just the last few days who are struggling with big problems. Life and health concerns may seem to overwhelm. But look up to God for He is the answer. His Word says if you are His child: He will "HELP, KEEP and PRESERVE you NOW and FOREVER!
